SUSTAINABLE Platform: A New Era for Smart Farming and Vineyard Automation

TLDR: The SUSTAINABLE platform is a smart farming solution integrating IoT, AI, satellite imaging, and role-based task management to enhance efficiency, traceability, and sustainability in agriculture, particularly in viticulture. It transforms diverse data from sensors and imagery into actionable insights, automates agricultural workflows, and provides a user-friendly dashboard for various stakeholders. The platform’s effectiveness was successfully demonstrated through a pilot use case in a Greek vineyard.

The global agricultural sector is facing significant challenges, including increasing food demands, climate variability, and the need for more sustainable practices. Traditional farming methods often struggle to maintain consistent crop quality while minimizing waste and contamination risks. In response to these pressing issues, a transformative approach known as Agriculture 4.0, which applies Industry 4.0 technologies to farming, has emerged. This involves leveraging advancements like the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and big data analytics to enhance precision, efficiency, and traceability across the entire agricultural value chain.

Addressing these challenges, researchers from the Industrial Systems Institute at ATHENA Research Center have introduced the SUSTAINABLE platform, a smart farming solution designed to seamlessly integrate various cutting-edge technologies. This platform combines IoT sensors, AI-driven analytics, satellite imaging, and a unique role-based task orchestration system to enable efficient, traceable, and sustainable agriculture. While its principles are broadly applicable, the platform has been specifically pilot-tested in viticulture, focusing on Mediterranean vineyards.

Key Features of the SUSTAINABLE Platform

Unlike conventional systems that merely collect raw data, SUSTAINABLE operates at an information level, transforming inputs from diverse sources into actionable insights for stakeholders. It integrates ready-to-use solutions not as isolated data streams but as interconnected decision-support tools. Key features include:

  • Satellite Index Integration: The platform utilizes high-resolution satellite imagery with multi-index analysis, including Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Normalized Difference Moisture Index (NDMI), and Optimized Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (OSAVI). This provides crucial data on vegetation health and density.
  • Real-time Environmental Data: Environmental conditions are continuously monitored via weather stations, providing live data on temperature, humidity, and dew point.
  • Role-Aware Task Management: A core component is its task management system, which assists stakeholders like agronomists, farmers, and field workers in tracking and executing field activities such as spraying and harvesting. This system is tailored to specific roles within the farming ecosystem.
  • Interoperability: The platform is designed to integrate with various external agricultural data systems, standardizing inputs from sensor readings to management directives into a consistent internal model, accessible via a secure REST API.

How it Works: The Architecture

The SUSTAINABLE platform is engineered as a unified system for managing a farm’s work plan, built on a modular design for flexibility and scalability. It comprises three core interconnected subsystems:

  • Agricultural Processes Designer: This intuitive tool allows farm managers and agronomists to design and transform agricultural processes using the Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) language.
  • Execution Engine: This subsystem processes the BPMN files, automating tasks and integrating with the User Dashboard through a Communication Broker. It handles constant monitoring, such as detecting when values exceed temperature or humidity thresholds.
  • User Dashboard: This is the presentation layer for end-users, providing necessary information for tasks, notifications, process monitoring, and customizable views of external data streams. It supports both web browsers and mobile devices and enforces role-based access control.

A Real-World Application in Viticulture

The platform’s effectiveness was demonstrated through a use case scenario at a small, independent Greek winery. This involved modeling daily and annual operational processes, such as pruning, quality control analysis, satellite image analysis for NDVI reports, on-site plant assessment, and fetching daily weather forecasts and disease outbreak warnings. The system successfully integrated data from external platforms like Macro Expert Kft for weather and pest predictions, Graniot for satellite imagery, GAIA Robotics for drone data, and DNA Phone for quality control. During the pilot execution in May 2025, the integration of data and functionalities from external systems was successful, and users found the Dashboard easy to understand and operate.

The SUSTAINABLE platform represents a significant advancement in smart viticulture by merging satellite analytics, IoT, and workflow orchestration into a unified system. It aims to improve decision-making, enable proactive interventions, and promote sustainability in agriculture. Future developments plan to enhance its core architecture by expanding integration capabilities with a wider range of IoT sensors and autonomous machinery, introduce an advanced analytics layer with machine learning models for predictive insights, and conduct extensive user experience research.
